A few things about war

In
the battlefield

Paths
are chosen

When
warriors collide

Some
survive and others die

Some
fight for politics

Others
fight for glory

And
others just for money

There’s
always blood

There’s
always pain

There
are many paths to choose

But
some choose to take part in war

They
see the dead

And
comeback with problems

At
least some of them do

Others
see the dead

And
go back to combat

Aldo the Puppet Master

I
try to be free, but he has me tied in strings. Aldo is his name, but they call
him The Puppet Master. I have been part of his show for two years now.
Thankfully I am not the main attraction in his act. But my dear friend Angelica
must suffer everyday which, in a way, hurts me as well for she is my girlfriend
and watching her go through this pain hurts me inside. She has been here for a
little over a year. I was trapped under Aldo’s grasp one day when I was alone
in my hands, a group of his minions came destroyed the front door to my house
and they didn’t waste any time trying to hunt me down. They caught me easily
for they had guns filled with sleep serum injections. Angelica on the other
hand was captured one day when she was in the office of a private investigator
called Russell Cera. She had hired him to find me since the police hadn’t found
me yet. The day she was captured was a normal one and everything seemed to be
going like she had planned until Aldo’s minions came to Cera’s office and took
her down easily.

Now
as we try to get out of these strings the Puppet Master sleeps and so do all of
his minions. Twenty minutes have gone by since we started, luckily none of them
have awaken. But we don’t have much time for in a few minutes Aldo will wake up
and begin his daily routine. Please God let us get out safe so we could happily
continue our life together as a couple and hopefully we can get married soon.
We try to take off the strings but they are attached to our backs, so we rip
skin off every time we pull them. Blood drips from our backs as we continue to
move. We try not to yell for our lives are at stake. Angelica is almost free
with just a little push I think she can be completely free. She moans, Aldo
snores and I quickly look at the Puppet Master, luckily he doesn’t wake up. Now
that she is free I tell her to run while I continue to try and break free.
Blood covers the floor as I try to take off the strings and Angelica runs to
find an exit. The Puppet Master wakes up and he looks at me and what I’m trying
to do, I give up with the hopes that my dear Angelica has escaped this devilish
place.

Calle 13 – “Entren Los Que Quieran” (2010)

The
first three by Puerto Rican duo Calle 13 were all masterworks of music. Their
self-titled first production was highly influenced by reggaeton which was
probably the most popular musical genre in Latin America at its time; their
second piece Residente o Visitante continued to have a few reggaeton
influences but it was highly more inclined to alternative hip hop and Latin
sounds; their third production Los de Atras Vienen Conmigo completely
said “goodbye” to reggaeton and focused on other musical genres such as
alternative hip hop, cumbia, salsa and even electro; this new production, like
its predecessor, doesn’t have any contact whatsoever with reggaeton and instead
focuses on other world-like genres where there can be found influences from the
usual hip hop, Hawaii, India, Broadway, rock music, merengue and even Western
cinema.

I
had been waiting for a long time to see what would be Calle 13’s new album and
what types of music would this new production explore seeing that in each album
new musical genres were being taken as influences. When it finally came out I
was very excited, I mean quickly went out, bought it and when I put it in my
car I was, first of all, laughing my ass off but then I was completely amazed. Calle 13 just never seizes
to amaze me. This album is way more personal and it focuses more on social
issues like political, death and the use of guns which can be seen in songs
like “La Bala”, “Vamo’ A Portarnos Mal”, “Preparame La Cena” and “Digo Lo Que
Pienso”. A few artists that helped the duo complete this masterpiece are Omar
Rodriguez-Lopez, of The Mars Volta, Seun Kuti and Toto la Momposina. Overall
the album is just a masterwork of music and it has to be one of the greatest
productions from any Latin American and overall artist.

And the Award for Creepiest Kid in a Movie Goes To…The Baby from David Lynch’s Eraserhead

Okay so I have seen all the movies in The Omen series, I did see The Exorcist and I have seen Samara from The Ring many, many times. But I had never seen the baby from Eraserhead because I had never seen the flick. Now that I have seen this 1977 surreal film I can say that this baby, or whatever you think it is, is without a doubt the creepiest and nastiest child I have seen in a horror movie. The things that David Lynch did with this character in his film debut are some of the most twisted and imaginative things I have ever seen in cinema. I mean the scene where the baby pops out Henry Spencer’s head and he comes out as the new head for Henry’s body is just amazing. And the way this creature moves its eyes and when it gets sick, oh my god it is just excellence. With this creation David Lynch truly proved, at least to me, that he can make some really scary stuff and he has the potential to be a master of horror like John Carpenter and Wes Craven. So my award, even though I don’t really have anything to give, for the creepiest kid in a movie goes to the baby from David Lynch’s Eraserhead.

Eraserhead (1977)

Okay so I’m just gonna start by saying “What the hell is up in David Lynch’s mind?” That said I would like to bring you, the reader, into my review of Lynch’s film debut Eraserhead. This 1977 surreal horror sets us in what appears to be a post-apocalyptic industrial town where the main character Henry Spencer constantly has to deal with this surreal dreamscape which is constantly going back and forth, so much in fact that his own baby seems to be a nightmare in its own way. That’s all I think I can say about the story because the plot itself is a very complicated one to follow, so readers if you’re planning to see this movie pay a lot of attention or else you’ll get lost.

Now what can I say about this magnificent feature. Okay at first I had no idea what I was getting into, I just knew it was going to be a weird flick. After watching it, I must say it is very weird indeed, it feels like David Lynch just blasted you with a compilation of dreams, nightmares and a few things he had in his imagination along the way. The picture can get a bit boring at time, but trust me it is worth it because when you least expect it you’ll get blown away with something that comes just straight out of the bloom. The special effects in this film are simply magnificent for the budget it had, which was $10,000 if I might add. The acting in the flick is also fantastic. But the one thing that truly makes this movie outstanding is the direction and imagination from David Lynch; I mean who else would have thought to create such a weird creature (yes I am referring to Henry’s baby) and such a creative world. The film is truly remarkable, even though it can be a bit difficult to understand and a bit boring at times.

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
