MacGruber (2010)

I had always wanted to see this film
because it seemed hilarious. In this 2010 comedy Will Forte brings his throat
ripping Saturday Night Live (SNL) character MacGruber by pitting him against
his nemesis (Val Kilmer). MacGruber first retired after from his services as a
soldier when his wife (Maya Rudolph) was killed. But now when his former boss
(Poweers Boothe) finds out that MacGruber’s nemesis has a nuclear weapon in
possession he will call the soldier of fortune for some help along with a new
team (Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillippe).

This flick is funny from beginning
to finish. Even the action scenes in this movie are comical. Just like the Wayne’s
World series and the classic Blues Brothers this SNL based feature
brings just what the audience wants: lots of great jokes splattered in their
faces so they can laugh so hard they’ll maybe pi in their pants. Now although
the picture is very funny, the jokes in it are very raw so the viewer must have
a lot of sense of humor to watch it or else he or she will not enjoy it. Other
than that the flick is perfectly entertaining and over the top funny.

And the Award for Creepiest Kid in a Movie Goes To…The Baby from David Lynch’s Eraserhead

Okay so I have seen all the movies in The Omen series, I did see The Exorcist and I have seen Samara from The Ring many, many times. But I had never seen the baby from Eraserhead because I had never seen the flick. Now that I have seen this 1977 surreal film I can say that this baby, or whatever you think it is, is without a doubt the creepiest and nastiest child I have seen in a horror movie. The things that David Lynch did with this character in his film debut are some of the most twisted and imaginative things I have ever seen in cinema. I mean the scene where the baby pops out Henry Spencer’s head and he comes out as the new head for Henry’s body is just amazing. And the way this creature moves its eyes and when it gets sick, oh my god it is just excellence. With this creation David Lynch truly proved, at least to me, that he can make some really scary stuff and he has the potential to be a master of horror like John Carpenter and Wes Craven. So my award, even though I don’t really have anything to give, for the creepiest kid in a movie goes to the baby from David Lynch’s Eraserhead.

Assault in the Ring (2009)

This 2009 documentary has to be one
of the greatest sports documentaries released by HBO I have seen since I
started watching movies frequently when I was thirteen. In this film we get the
story of Luis Resto and Billy Collins, Jr. and how their 1983 boxing match
affected their lives. Billy’s life ended in tragedy at the age of twenty-two
after suffering from depression, Luis’s has been a life filled nightmares that
remind him of this bout where he personally knew that something wrong had been
done with his boxing gloves, something that would cause the problems in the
fight.

Eric Darth being the director did
everything right for this movie; he went to the right people and asked the
right questions, even forcing Luis Resto to confess everything that he knew
that happened the night of the fight, making the documentary the masterpiece
that it is. The cinematography in this flick is great. The only thing that
sucks a bit is that Panama Lewis and Luis Resto along with his family are a bit
difficult to understand when they talk, but thanks to the subtitles we
understand everything. Overall the feature is excellent, very emotional and
very well captured.

El Altar de los Condenados

El Altar de los Condenados is a short film I made for my ESPA 3305: Cine y Literatura course from college. The movie took me about three days to shoot, one day to write and approximately
an entire day of editing. I am highly satisfied with the result I got but I would have liked to shoot the final scene once again because the lighting sucks. But sadly I couldn’t because I had to hand the flick. El Alatar de los Condenados, which is based on “Tales of the Zombie” from MARVEL Comics, tells the story of Simon Garth a wealthy man who his kidnapped by his gardener so he can be turned into a zombie by some voodooists. The picture is almost ten minutes long and it stars my dear friends Ricardo Rivera as Simon Garth, Vale Ann Almodovar as Donna Garth (Simon’s daughter), Emilio Ortiz as Gyps the vengeful gardener and Deddie Almodovar Ojeda as Layla (Simon’s secretary and the voodoo queen).
